Joseph Haydn 1732-1809. He was widely revered, immensely prolific and regarded as Viennas grand old man of music. In May 1809, when Napoleons armies captured the city of Vienna, Napoleon himself ordered that an honour guard be placed outside the home where the master composer lay on his death bed.
